ATL

We arrived in Atlanta right around lunch time and drove straight to The Varsity…the world’s largest drive-in restaurant serving since 1928. It can accommodate 600 cars and 800 people inside. They serve two miles of hot dogs, a ton of onions, 2500 pounds of potatoes, 5000 fried pies and 300 gallons of chili daily and it’s all made from scratch. We had slaw dogs, a chili burger, a glorified bacon cheese burger, onion rings and frosted oranges. The line was out of control, at least 12 registers that each had at least 20 people in line. We’re glad we went for the experience though (& glad that we didn’t try to go the next day because there was a Georgia Tech game and on game days they apparently feed 30,000 people in one day)! After lunch we settled in at Aunt Peggy & Uncle Eric’s place, relaxed for a while and then headed our for a nice dinner at the Roswell Tea House. The little tea house only serves dinner on Fri. & Sat. nights and the owner is from Belgium so the food is simple and inspired by their homeland. The next morning we met up with yet another college friend of ours, Emilee, and had lunch with her and her boyfriend, Al, at Inc., a South American “street food” restaurant. We sat on the patio and enjoyed sangria and lots of delicious food. Then Emilee drove us through downtown Atlanta and gave us a little tour before dropping us off at the World of Coka-Cola where we learned about the history of Coke, saw a bottling line and sampled over 60 types of Coka-Cola beverages from all over the world. As soon as we walked out of the World of Coke Aunt Peggy & Uncle Eric where waiting at the curb to take us to Cirque du Soleil, “OVO”!!! Uncle Eric navigated through the Georgia Tech traffic like an expert cabbie and we made it just in time for the show to start. Cirque du Soleil was AMAZING…2 1/2 hours of contortionist, trapeze artists, trampoline acrobatics, cool costumes and great theatrics. We highly recommend going to Cirque du Soleil if you’ve never been. Following the show we ate some upscale Mexican food at Rosa Mexicano, complete with table side guacamole and finished our jam packed day in ATL happy and full. The next morning (this morning, the 14th) Aunt Peggy whipped up a delicious breakfast, then we all went to the park so Ziggy could get some serious exercise before we got back on the road…and now we’re headed West on I-20…next destination unknown!
